Root Canal Treatment
Modern root canal treatment has made the procedure far more efficient, comfortable and successful. At Randwick Dental Care, our dentists use the latest rotary instruments to improve the entire root canal process for our patients.
For many years, root canals were associated with lengthy, painful treatments. Root canal therapy actually relieves, rather than causes, pain and is a tooth-saving procedure to avoid extraction.
Symptoms Indicating the Need for Root Canal Treatment
Signs of an infection can vary vastly from one person to the next, but many of the most common symptoms are:
- Inflammation
- Pain and pressure
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- Discolouration of tooth
- A small lesion on the gums
- Throbbing that worsens when lying down
- Swelling of gums, face, jaw or neck
Additionally, having an active infection anywhere in the body puts your overall health at risk. In some cases, the infection can impact the heart or brain and cause serious medical complications.
Tooth-Saving Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment eliminates the infection and promotes healing. Root canals are designed to save teeth from extraction and are a more conservative approach than extracting and replacing a missing tooth.
One of our experienced dentists, Dr Darren Scott, Dr Sean Dersch, Dr Vivienne Tye, Dr Udayha Kumar and Dr Brendan Scott will ensure that you feel completely comfortable before beginning any procedure.
They then will make a small access to the tooth to remove infection and bacteria before placing medication to assist with healing. We will fill the canal and seal the tooth to keep out bacteria and food.
Your body’s natural healing process will take over, and we will follow up your treatment to ensure that the tooth heals properly.
Protecting Your Root Canal Tooth
Because we have removed the blood supply and nerve, the tooth will become more brittle and could break more easily. We often recommend a dental crown after root canal treatment to stabilise the tooth, protect the tooth from cracks and fractures and cover any discolouration.
Root canal treatment can add years of function and maintain the beauty of your smile.
A Pain-Free Experience for Our Patients
We understand that anxiety can accompany dental procedures, especially those that have painful symptoms. We are here to reassure you that your comfort is our number one priority, and we will never begin treatment before ensuring that your tooth is completely anaesthetised throughout. You will likely feel a dramatic improvement in your symptoms immediately.
We Welcome You to Get in Touch
Don’t postpone treatment or wait for tooth pain to worsen into a dental emergency. We welcome you to get in touch right away so that we can help you feel better again quickly. Our Randwick dental practice helps our patients avoid dental emergencies by providing personalised preventative dentistry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Many people associate root canal treatment with pain because the symptoms can be severe. Toothache and pain may keep you awake at night and cause missed time at work. In reality, root canals save teeth that would otherwise require extraction. Our dentists at Randwick Dental Care provide root canals with minimal discomfort.
We use the latest techniques to ensure all procedures are performed comfortably and efficiently. We will anaesthetize the area, and the root canal therapy procedure will feel similar to a standard filling. We use modern, titanium rotary dental instruments making root canal treatment faster and with superior results. The flexible tips clean tooth canals thoroughly without damaging the roots.
You will likely feel dramatic improvement immediately after your appointment. Though some residual sensitivity will remain for a few days, you should gradually feel better each day until your tooth heals completely.
When you come back for your follow-up exam, we will discuss a permanent restoration to protect your tooth. We typically recommend a dental crown, which will add stability to your tooth and protect it from fractures or breaking down.
If you suspect you need a root canal and live in Randwick or the surrounding communities, we invite you to arrange an appointment where we will help you regain your oral health. We strive to treat dental emergencies on the same day.
