Paediatric Dentistry

Our dental clinic looks after our local families – from toddlers to seniors – and welcomes children from their very first dental visit. Early childhood dentistry establishes a healthy foundation for your little one’s smile.

According to the Australian Dental Association, children should have their first dental visit around the time their first tooth erupts, or by age one.

Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

First dental exams are as much about evaluating the health of your child’s teeth and gums as it is to educate parents about what to expect as their child grows and to answer any questions they have about their child's oral health.

We make kids’ first visits fun by taking them for a ride in the chair and helping them become familiar with our dental team and with the dental clinic.

We enjoy partnering with parents to keep your family’s littlest smiles healthy and happy. Some of the topics we will cover during your child's dental appointment include but are not limited to:

  • Diet counselling
  • Habits such as thumb sucking and pacifiers
  • Oral hygiene education and demonstration
  • Bottle use
  • Cavity prevention

We use language that your child will understand and avoid any scary terms. Our gentle dentists and Oral Health Therapist always work at your child’s pace and never force treatment or go beyond your child’s attention span and comfort zone.

Caring for Your Child’s Teeth at Home

Children will need assistance brushing and flossing their teeth until they develop the dedication and dexterity to manage it on their own. The recommendation is to assist with your child's oral hygiene routine until they have the manual dexterity to tie their shoelaces.

  • Use only a small smear of age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste
  • Brush all surfaces of teeth, angling the bristles toward the gums and performing gentle circles
  • Brush your child’s tongue gently
  • Floss between all teeth and behind the most posterior tooth

Having a healthy diet will help prevent decay and cavities, which is the most common childhood disease. We recommend maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, limiting snacking and avoiding sugary or acidic foods and drinks. We encourage avoiding milk in nighttime bottles and recommend using plain water.

Dentistry for Your Growing Child

Regular dental appointments during childhood can mean a healthier smile as an adult. As with our adult patients, we customise the dentistry we provide and take a conservative approach to your kid’s dental treatment.

Although baby teeth fall out as a normal part of development, they are essential to developing healthy permanent teeth. Primary teeth provide a blueprint that offers guidance and reserves enough space for emerging teeth.

We provide children's dentistry services including:

  • Regular dental cleanings
  • Paediatric dental exams
  • Fluoride treatment and fissure sealants
  • Childrens' fillings
  • Stainless steel crowns
  • Decay detecting x-rays
  • Orthodontic evaluation
  • Wisdom teeth evaluation
  • Sports guards
  • Diet counseling
  • Oral hygiene instructions

We love watching families grow and being a part of your children’s milestones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kids love to learn and are naturally curious. We aim to help them develop a positive attitude regarding their dental visits by alleviating any fears associated with the unknown. Our friendly dentists love welcoming kids to the practice and make it a positive experience we hope your child will look forward to.

We invite children to come with parents to their appointments right away, and we follow the recommendation of the Australian Dental Association, which advises that kids have their first dental appointment around the time their first tooth comes in.

It is important that they have their teeth and dental development checked so that if any issues do arise, we can address them quickly.

Because dental decay is the most common preventable childhood disease, much of our focus will be on educating kids and parents on useful home care routines and protecting teeth by arranging regular dental cleans and check-ups. We also offer fluoride treatments and sealants for kids who are at a higher risk of developing cavities.

Children's energy and presence brighten our day, and it also feels satisfying knowing that we are playing a role in your child’s healthy smile by teaching good oral hygiene habits that can last a lifetime.
