Extractions

We strive to protect your teeth through preventative dentistry and tooth-saving restorations. Sometimes, dental disease or trauma cause irreparable damage that requires the removal of a problematic tooth.

Losing a tooth can raise a number of questions about the future of your oral health and smile. Our Randwick dentists are here to ensure that your teeth extraction procedures are comfortable and heal properly.

Conditions Requiring Teeth Extractions

Extracting a tooth is often the last resort, and we never take the recommendation lightly. If you do need to have a tooth extracted, we will make sure your procedure goes smoothly. Some conditions requiring tooth extraction include:

  • Teeth broken at or below the gumline
  • Non-restorable deep decay
  • Failed root canal procedures
  • Overcrowding
  • Orthodontic extractions
  • Wisdom teeth extractions

A dental exam with Dr Darren Scott, Dr Sean Dersch, Dr Brendan Scott, Dr Vivienne Tye, Dr Udayha Kumar or our Oral Health Therapist Abbi Mulholland, will determine if removing your tooth will improve your oral health. We will always discuss all of your options and help you make a choice that works well for you and helps you achieve your dental goals.

Your Dental Extraction Procedure

While our aim is always to preserve natural teeth wherever possible, extractions may sometimes be necessary to support your overall oral health. Whether due to severe decay, infection, crowding, or impacted wisdom teeth, removing a problematic tooth can help prevent pain and further complications. All of our experienced dentists are qualified to perform extractions as part of your care. For particularly complex cases, patients may be referred to Dr Brendan Scott, who has undertaken advanced training in oral surgery and is highly skilled in managing more complex procedures with precision and compassion.

Providing comfortable dentistry is a priority in our dental clinic, and we will always make sure that we fully anaesthetise the area before we begin. We will also communicate with you throughout your procedure to ensure you remain comfortable.

An x-ray of the tooth and bone will determine how we proceed with your extraction to remove the tooth while leaving the nerve intact and protecting the bone.

If a tooth has fully erupted, we will likely perform a general extraction, and when a tooth has not fully emerged, a surgical extraction may be necessary. Either way, we will remove the tooth gently. If it is necessary, we may place stitches to ensure that your tissue heals well and without complication.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Our jaws are smaller than our ancestors’ jaws because of our modern diet, which sometimes leaves inadequate space for wisdom teeth to erupt fully. Removing them can prevent overcrowding, jaw dysfunction, pain or damage to adjacent healthy teeth.

Post-Surgical Care and Tooth-Replacement

After your procedure, we will go over how to care for the surgical area.

After your extraction, we recommended that you avoid strenuous activity, spitting, drinking through a straw or smoke cigarettes for 48 hours post procedure. This is because it may dislodge the healing tissue that forms on the site, causing bleeding or a painful condition called dry socket.

Avoid brushing the area directly with your toothbrush for several days. You can rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep the area clean and to soothe the tissue.

At your follow-up appointment, we will discuss tooth-replacement options if necessary. Dental implants, bridges and partial dentures offer aesthetic solutions for your smile.
